Why Isn’t My Manifesting Working? The Role of Your Subconscious Mind
You’ve done the vision board, said the affirmations, visualised the relationship, the money, the business or the life you want. You’ve tried to think positively, trust the Universe and “act as if”, but nothing seems to be moving. Or perhaps things do start moving, something good happens, and before you know it you’re right back where you started.
So what are you doing wrong?
Maybe nothing. But there is a question I think is far more useful than asking why your manifestation hasn’t arrived yet:
What do you actually believe about having the thing you say you want?
Because wanting something consciously and believing you can have it, receive it and actually hold onto it are very different things.
For more than a decade, I’ve worked with the subconscious mind, metaphysics and the patterns that influence how we think, feel, behave and create. One thing I see again and again is that people usually know what they want. The interesting part is discovering what they believe about themselves in relation to having it.
Your Conscious Mind Is Only Part of the Conversation
Let’s say you want more money. Consciously, you’re very clear about it. You want financial freedom, you want your business to grow, you want more clients and you want to earn more.
But what happens when we look underneath that desire?
Maybe somewhere inside you believe that money is hard to make, that you’re terrible with money, that people like you don’t become wealthy, that successful people are greedy or that you have to work incredibly hard to deserve financial success. Perhaps you have an even more personal belief: every time things start going well for me, something goes wrong.
Suddenly, we have a very different conversation.
The same thing can happen with relationships. Consciously, you want a loving, secure relationship. But underneath that desire might be years of believing that people leave, love isn’t safe, you always choose the wrong person or that you have to prove your worth before somebody will love you.
Then we wonder why saying “I am loved” twenty times in the mirror hasn’t completely changed things.
This is why I believe manifesting has to involve more than what we consciously think we want. We have to become curious about the beliefs, expectations and patterns sitting underneath it.
I Don’t Believe Manifesting Means Sitting Back and Waiting
This is probably where my approach differs from some manifestation teaching. I don’t believe you put something on a vision board, raise your vibration and then hand responsibility for your life over to the Universe.
You have a part to play. A huge part.
Your thoughts matter. Your beliefs matter. Your emotional state matters. Your decisions and actions matter. But I also believe that we have access to an intelligence far greater than our individual conscious minds. Call that God, Source, Creative Intelligence, Universal Intelligence or simply Life. Use whatever language feels right for you.
For me, the power sits in the relationship between the two: personal responsibility alongside a connection to something greater than ourselves.
This is why I prefer to think of manifesting as conscious co-creation. You are not sitting around waiting for life to happen to you, but you are not trying to control every detail of how it happens either. You are consciously participating in what comes next while remaining open to opportunities, people, ideas and possibilities that your conscious mind may never have thought of.
Stop Asking Only What You Want
Most manifesting begins with the question: What do I want?
It’s a great question, but I think we need to go further.
Who would you need to become to comfortably live the life you say you want?
Let’s imagine you want a hugely successful business. Can you comfortably be visible? Can you charge properly for your work? Can you cope when somebody says no? Can you make a decision without having a guarantee that it will work? Can you receive significantly more money without feeling guilty about it? Can you tolerate being more successful than some of the people around you?
Suddenly we’re not talking about a vision board anymore. We’re talking about identity, beliefs, emotions, behaviour and your capacity to live inside the reality you are asking for.
That, to me, is where this work gets really interesting.
Your Identity May Be Keeping You in the Same Life
We all carry ideas about who we are. I’m shy. I’m unlucky. I’m bad with money. I’m always the single one. I’m terrible at relationships. I never finish anything. Nothing ever works out for me. I always have to struggle.
Say something enough times and eventually you stop hearing it as an opinion. It simply becomes: this is who I am.
Then you start collecting evidence for it.
This is why future-self identity work is such a big part of what I do. I’m interested in the version of you who already feels comfortable in the life you are creating. How does that person think? What does she believe? What does she no longer tolerate? How does she respond when something goes wrong? What decisions does she make? How does she treat money? What does she expect from relationships? How does she speak to herself?
And perhaps the most useful question of all: what would that version of you do next?
You don’t need to wake up tomorrow pretending to be somebody you’re not. The point is to begin recognising where your current identity is making decisions on behalf of the person you are trying to become.
Your Capacity to Hold What You Desire
There is another part of manifesting that I don’t think we talk about enough, and that is our capacity to actually hold what we have been asking for. We spend so much time thinking about how to attract the relationship, the money, the successful business or the opportunity that we rarely stop to consider what happens when it actually arrives.
If struggle, uncertainty or things going wrong have been your normal for a long time, things going right can feel surprisingly uncomfortable. You finally meet someone wonderful and, instead of enjoying the relationship, part of you is waiting for them to leave. You have a brilliant month financially and immediately start worrying that next month will be terrible. Your business starts taking off and rather than enjoying the success, you find yourself wondering how long it will last. You have finally got the thing you wanted, but you are holding onto it so tightly because you are terrified it is going to slip through your fingers.
This is where I think the nervous system becomes such an important part of the conversation. It isn’t enough for your conscious mind to say, “Of course I want this.” If chaos, financial pressure, unavailable relationships or constantly having to fight for everything have been familiar for years, peace, abundance, consistency and ease can initially feel unfamiliar. And unfamiliar does not always feel safe.
For me, this is why manifesting cannot only be about attracting the next thing. We also have to create the internal capacity to receive it, hold it and allow it to become normal. Can you have a good month without preparing yourself for a bad one? Can somebody love you consistently without you looking for signs that they are about to disappear? Can you have money in the bank without immediately worrying about losing it? Can life simply be going well without part of you thinking, “Oh God, what’s going to happen now?”
This is something I work on a lot through subconscious reprogramming, Hypnotherapy, nervous-system regulation and daily recalibration. We are not only visualising a future reality. We are helping the mind and body become familiar with living inside it. We are creating a new normal where receiving something good does not immediately activate fear that it will be taken away.
Because sometimes the next level of manifesting isn’t learning how to get more.
It is learning how to feel safe when more arrives.
This Is Why I Don’t Love Generic Affirmations
I love affirmations and use them in my work all the time, but I don’t believe repeating a random list you found online is necessarily going to change a deeply held belief.
If somebody tells me, “I want to manifest £100,000,” I’m not immediately going to write, “I am a money magnet.”
I want to know more.
What do you currently believe about money? What happens emotionally when you imagine having £100,000? Do you believe you can create it? Do you believe you could keep it? What did your family teach you about wealthy people? What would change in your life if you had it, and is there anything about that change that frightens you?
Now we have something personal to work with.
This is exactly why I create personalised manifesting audios and scripts for clients. I don’t just ask what you want to manifest. I want to understand what you currently believe about having it, what the future version of you needs to believe instead and the language that actually means something to you.
There is a huge difference between repeating somebody else’s affirmation and hearing words that have been written specifically for the beliefs you are ready to change.
Your Future Self Needs to Become Familiar
One of my favourite parts of this work is future-self visualisation, but I don’t just want you imagining yourself stepping off a private jet with a Chanel handbag. Unless, of course, that really is your dream. No judgement here.
I want you inside an ordinary day in your future life.
Where do you wake up? How do you feel? What does your morning look like? How do you speak to yourself? How do you handle money? What decisions are you making? Who is around you? What are you no longer worrying about? What has become completely normal?
Most importantly, how does this version of you deal with the things that don’t go to plan?
Because your future life is still going to contain annoying emails, difficult conversations, bills, disappointments and people who get on your nerves. We are not trying to manifest a life in which nothing difficult ever happens.
We are creating a version of you who meets life differently.
This is one reason visualisation can be so powerful within my work. We are not simply fantasising about an end result. We are repeatedly making a different way of thinking, feeling and responding more familiar.
You Still Have to Move Your Feet
You can visualise the business, but eventually you have to tell people what you sell. You can manifest the relationship, but at some point you may need to go on the date. You can visualise the new career, but somebody has to send the application. You can ask for more money, but you might need to raise your prices, make the phone call, create the offer or finally look at your bank account.
This is conscious co-creation.
You do your part and then remain open to opportunities, ideas, people, guidance and possibilities that you could never have planned from where you are now.
I don’t believe in forcing every door open, but I do believe you have to walk towards some of them.
And sometimes the action you need to take will feel uncomfortable precisely because the old version of you wouldn’t have taken it. That doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going in the wrong direction. It might simply mean you are doing something new.
Sometimes the Block Isn’t What You Think It Is
This is where subconscious work becomes fascinating.
Imagine somebody desperately wants their business to become more successful. Consciously, there is no question about it. Of course they want more success.
But then we start exploring what success actually means to them.
What happens if the business becomes really successful?
I’ll have more responsibility.
And what does that mean?
People will expect more from me.
And then?
I could let them down.
And then?
Everyone will realise I don’t know what I’m doing.
There it is.
The conscious desire is success. But somewhere underneath it, success has become associated with exposure, pressure and the possibility of failure.
That is a very different problem from “I’m not manifesting hard enough.”
Once you can see the belief, you have something you can actually work with.
Sometimes You Don’t Actually Want What You’re Trying to Manifest
I think we need to talk about this more too.
Do you genuinely want the thing, or have you decided that having it would prove something about you?
Do you actually want the huge business? Do you want to get married? Do you want the high-profile career? Do you want to live abroad? Do you want millions of followers?
Or have you absorbed somebody else’s idea of what a successful life is supposed to look like?
Sometimes what we call resistance is useful information. Maybe you are trying to force yourself towards a life that doesn’t actually suit you.
This is one of the reasons I created my Identity Blueprints using Human Design, Astrology, Gene Keys and Numerology. I don’t believe a chart should dictate your future or tell you what to do with your life. I use these systems to create better questions about who you are, what comes naturally to you, what gives you energy, how you make decisions, what you value and what abundance or success might genuinely mean for you.
Because there is very little point successfully manifesting somebody else’s dream.
Repetition Matters More Than the Occasional Breakthrough
You can have an incredible Hypnotherapy session and leave feeling completely different. You can have a huge realisation during a ceremony, meditation or visualisation. You can finally understand why you keep repeating the same pattern.
And then Tuesday happens.
The email arrives. The person doesn’t text back. The client says no. You look at your bank account. Something triggers the old version of you and there it is again: the old thought, the old reaction, the old story.
This is why repetition is such an important part of my work.
Your old internal dialogue may have had decades of practice. We have to give the new one some airtime.
This is why I use daily recalibration practices, personalised audios, scripts, mirror work and repetition alongside the deeper sessions. I don’t want you spending three hours every morning desperately trying to manifest. I want the opposite. Ten focused minutes reconnecting with what you are creating, the beliefs you are strengthening and the person you are becoming can be enough.
Reconnect. Recalibrate. Then get on with your life.
Ask Yourself These Questions
Choose one thing you really want right now. Not ten things. Just one.
Then spend some time exploring what sits underneath it. What do you believe about having this? What do you believe about people who already have it? What scares you about actually getting it? What would change if it arrived tomorrow? Is any part of you benefiting from things staying exactly as they are? What identity would you have to leave behind? What would you need to believe instead? And if this became completely normal for you, what would that version of you do next?
Don’t try to produce the “right” answers. Pay attention to the uncomfortable ones, the ridiculous ones and the ones you immediately want to dismiss.
They are often far more interesting.
Manifesting Is Not About Blaming Yourself
I need to say this because I strongly dislike the version of manifestation teaching that turns every painful experience into, “You attracted it.”
No.
Life is more complicated than that.
Other people have free will. Circumstances exist. Systems exist. Chance exists. Things happen that we did not ask for, and pain is not evidence that you failed to think positively enough.
Something not happening on your preferred timeline also does not mean your vibration is wrong.
For me, conscious co-creation means taking responsibility for the areas where you do have influence: your thoughts, choices, boundaries, actions, habits, responses, relationship with yourself and willingness to change. It also means remaining open to something greater than what your conscious mind can currently see.
That is very different from believing you control everything.
So Why Isn’t Your Manifesting Working?
Maybe that isn’t the most useful question.
Try asking this instead:
What needs to change within me, and what do I need to do differently, to become available for the life I say I want?
Look at what you believe. Look at what you repeatedly tell yourself. Look at your identity, your choices, your actions and what you are tolerating. Look at where fear is making decisions for you. Look at whether you are trying to create something that genuinely belongs to you, and look at whether your mind and nervous system actually feel safe receiving and holding it.
Then do your part.
You don’t need to become a completely different person to create a different life. But you may need to stop rehearsing the version of yourself you are ready to leave behind.
And perhaps that is what manifesting is really asking of us.
Not simply: What do you want?
But:
Who are you willing to become to meet it?

Frequently Asked Questions
Why isn’t manifestation working for me?
There can be many reasons, but one useful place to look is the gap between what you consciously want and what you believe, expect and repeatedly do. You may also need to consider whether receiving what you want feels familiar and safe, whether your actions support the outcome you want and whether the goal genuinely belongs to you in the first place.
What are subconscious blocks in manifestation?
I use the term subconscious blocks to describe beliefs, associations and automatic patterns that appear to conflict with what you consciously want. For example, consciously wanting more money while associating wealth with greed, danger, responsibility or rejection.
Can your nervous system affect manifesting?
Your nervous system influences how you respond to stress, uncertainty, change and unfamiliar experiences. In my work, I am particularly interested in what happens when the positive change itself feels unfamiliar. Part of the process can therefore involve developing greater capacity to experience success, love, abundance or ease without immediately slipping back into familiar fear or protective patterns.
Can Hypnotherapy help with limiting beliefs?
Hypnotherapy can be used to explore thoughts, beliefs, perceptions and habitual responses while you are in a state of focused attention. In my work, I combine Hypnotherapy with visualisation, subconscious reprogramming and metaphysical practices according to the individual.
How often should I practise manifesting?
I prefer consistency over obsession. A short daily practice that reconnects you with your intention, beliefs and future-self identity can become part of your routine. Then go and live your life. Constantly checking whether your manifestation has arrived rather defeats the point.
Do personalised manifesting audios work better than generic ones?
I prefer personalised work because I can create something around your actual goals, beliefs, language and internal dialogue. Rather than trying to convince yourself of somebody else’s affirmation, you are repeatedly working with words and imagery designed specifically around what you are trying to change and create.
Is manifestation scientifically proven?
There is research into individual practices commonly used within manifestation work, including mental imagery, goal setting, behaviour change and Hypnosis. That is not the same as scientific evidence that thinking about something guarantees that an external event will occur.
My own work intentionally brings together psychological and subconscious practices with metaphysical philosophy and conscious co-creation. I don’t pretend those things are all supported by the same type of evidence. They aren’t, and I don’t need them to be.
I believe there is room to understand what psychology can teach us about the mind while remaining curious about the parts of human experience we still cannot fully explain.
That is where much of my work lives.
