What to Expect After Kambo and the Day After
One of the most common questions people ask before their first Kambo ceremony is:
"How am I going to feel afterwards?"
Closely followed by:
"Can I go to work the next day?"
The answer might surprise you.
For most people, Kambo doesn't mean putting your life on hold afterwards.
The active Kambo experience itself typically lasts around 20 to 30 minutes. Once the Kambo has been removed, you rest, recover, eat and take whatever time you need at the clinic before leaving.
Then you get on with your life.
There is no expected downtime.
At The Kambo Clinic, aftercare is still an important part of the ceremony. We don't simply finish your Kambo session, send you home and disappear.
We want you to understand what happens afterwards, what you can do and what you might notice over the following few days.
WHAT HAPPENS IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOUR KAMBO CEREMONY?
The intense part of a Kambo ceremony is short.
The Kambo is applied to the points and the active experience typically lasts around 20 to 30 minutes.
Once the Kambo is removed, the ceremony moves into recovery.
Before you leave The Kambo Clinic, we make sure you have had time to rest, recover, eat and feel ready to go home.
We provide food and nourishment after your ceremony and encourage you to take your time.
There is no prize for getting up and rushing out of the door.
You've just had your Kambo experience.
Have a rest.
Have something to eat.
Let yourself settle.
Once your practitioner is happy for you to leave, you can head home and continue with your day.
The Kambo experience has happened.
You don't then spend the next several days recovering from it.
WE DON'T DISAPPEAR AFTER YOUR SESSION
Aftercare matters to us.
Following your ceremony, The Kambo Clinic will contact you by email to see how you are feeling.
You will also have 24-hour access to your practitioner via WhatsApp following your session.
We don't expect you to need us.
Most clients don't.
But we think it's important that you know we're there.
Sometimes you may simply want to ask:
"Is this normal?"
"Can I do this?"
"Can I eat that?"
"Is it normal that I'm this hungry?"
Rather than sitting at home wondering or searching the internet, you can ask the practitioner who actually carried out your ceremony.
HOW WILL I FEEL AFTER KAMBO?
Everyone responds differently, but many of our clients describe feeling energised, clear and focused after their ceremony.
You may notice changes in:
Energy
Focus
Mental clarity
Motivation
General sense of wellbeing
Some clients notice these changes immediately.
Others become more aware of them as they move through their normal lives over the following few days.
This is an important distinction.
You are not waiting for the Kambo ceremony to finish.
It has finished.
What you are noticing now is how you feel as you return to everyday life.
CAN I GO TO WORK AFTER KAMBO?
Yes.
The active Kambo experience itself typically lasts around 20 to 30 minutes.
Once the Kambo has been removed, you rest, recover, eat and take whatever time you need at the clinic before leaving.
That's it.
There is no expected downtime afterwards and you do not need to book several days off work to recover.
The Kambo experience happens during the ceremony.
Then you get on with your life.
Go to work.
See your friends.
Spend time with your family.
Walk the dog.
Do your normal things.
In many ways, that's where the interesting part begins.
Your homework after Kambo isn't to lie at home waiting for something to happen.
It's to live your life and notice how different you feel.
Notice your energy.
Notice your focus.
Notice your mood.
Notice your motivation.
Notice your habits, cravings and choices.
Notice what feels different as you move through your normal life.
CAN I EXERCISE AFTER KAMBO?
Yes.
Once your ceremony is complete, you have recovered, eaten and left the clinic, you can return to your normal activities, including training.
Many of our active clients particularly enjoy getting back into the gym, running or returning to their usual training because they describe feeling focused, energised and clear.
Kambo contains numerous biologically active peptides, which is one of the reasons the secretion has attracted scientific interest.
However, this does not mean that Kambo itself has been clinically proven to improve sporting performance, muscle recovery or athletic ability.
So we make an important distinction between the scientific research and what our clients personally report experiencing.
You don't need to treat yourself as though you are recovering from an illness.
The ceremony is over.
Get back to your life and notice how you feel within it.
WHAT ABOUT THE GYM THE SAME DAY?
You can train the same day.
Your Kambo experience does not continue for hours after you leave the clinic.
The active part of the ceremony typically lasts around 20 to 30 minutes. Afterwards, you rest, recover, eat and make sure you feel back to yourself before leaving.
If you want to go to the gym later, you can.
The one thing we recommend avoiding for the first 24 hours is deliberately dehydrating yourself through activities such as saunas and steam rooms.
AVOID SAUNAS AND STEAM ROOMS FOR THE FIRST 24 HOURS
There is one part of your normal fitness routine we suggest leaving alone temporarily.
Saunas and steam rooms.
At The Kambo Clinic, we recommend avoiding them for at least the first 24 hours after your ceremony.
Why?
Kambo commonly involves purging.
Vomiting and, for some people, diarrhoea can affect fluid and electrolyte balance.
A sauna or steam room deliberately makes you sweat and lose additional fluid.
There is simply no need to add another dehydrating experience immediately after your ceremony.
Give your body a day to eat, hydrate normally and rebalance.
Then you can return to your usual routine after a 24 hour break.
HYDRATION AFTER KAMBO
Hydration after Kambo is important, but more water is not automatically better.
This is something people sometimes misunderstand.
Kambo has been associated in published medical reports with disturbances in fluid and electrolyte balance, including cases of hyponatraemia.
Excessive consumption of plain water can itself contribute to problems.
So don't finish your ceremony and decide that you need to drink litres and litres of water to "flush everything out."
You don't.
Follow the hydration guidance provided by your practitioner.
Eat.
Drink normally.
Allow your body to rebalance.
WHAT SHOULD I EAT AFTER KAMBO?
You can return to normal, nourishing food after your ceremony.
At The Kambo Clinic, we provide food after your session before you leave.
We recommend avoiding alcohol for a minimum of 24 hours and generally suggest avoiding dairy and large amounts of added sugar during that initial period.
Some clients also find that they are extremely hungry for the following two to four days.
If you're hungry, eat.
Your body has fasted and undergone an intense physical experience.
Fuel it.
We have written a complete guide explaining what to eat before and after Kambo, including fasting, caffeine, dairy, sugar and what to eat the following day.
WHAT ABOUT CAFFEINE?
Be sensible.
Some people feel extremely energised following Kambo.
If you're already feeling alert and switched on, adding several coffees or energy drinks may leave you feeling unnecessarily wired.
You might feel brilliant at 3pm and then discover at midnight that your brain has absolutely no intention of going to sleep.
Check in with yourself before automatically reaching for your normal caffeine.
You may simply not need as much.
WHAT ABOUT ALCOHOL?
We recommend avoiding alcohol for a minimum of 24 hours after Kambo.
Your body has already been through a significant physical process.
Give it some time before introducing alcohol again.
If your relationship with alcohol involves regular heavy consumption, this should have been discussed individually with your practitioner before your ceremony rather than simply stopping suddenly.
WHAT WILL I FEEL OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS?
This is where we encourage you to become curious.
You aren't recovering from the ceremony for the next few days.
The ceremony is finished.
Instead, start noticing yourself.
Many clients report increased energy, greater focus, mental clarity and changes in motivation over the following days.
You may notice that you want to train.
You may feel more productive at work.
You might suddenly want to sort something out that you have been putting off.
You might notice changes in your appetite or cravings.
You might simply feel different.
There is no checklist of things you are supposed to experience.
Don't become so focused on what somebody else says you "should" feel after Kambo that you stop paying attention to yourself.
Your experience is your experience.
WHEN SHOULD I CONTACT MY PRACTITIONER?
If something doesn't feel right or you simply have a question, contact your practitioner.
If you can't get hold of your practitioner for whatever reason, you are welcome to contact us at The Kambo Clinic.
You do not need to wait until something becomes a major concern before sending a message.
That is exactly why we provide aftercare.
We would much rather you ask a question than sit at home worrying about it.
If you experience severe, persistent or rapidly worsening symptoms, particularly confusion, seizures, fainting, significant breathing difficulties or prolonged uncontrolled vomiting, seek urgent medical attention rather than relying solely on practitioner aftercare.
Serious complications following Kambo are uncommon, but they have been documented, and responsible practice means acknowledging that.
THE DAY AFTER KAMBO
The day after Kambo is not supposed to be a recovery day.
Get up.
Go to work.
Train.
See people.
Do the school run.
Walk the dog.
Go out.
Live your normal life.
There is no expected downtime.
The physical Kambo experience happened during your ceremony and you were given time to rest and recover before leaving the clinic.
Now your homework is simply to live.
Pay attention to yourself as you do.
How is your energy?
How is your focus?
How do you feel emotionally?
What are you craving?
What aren't you craving anymore?
How motivated do you feel?
What feels easier?
What feels different?
You don't need to search for an experience. Just notice.
At The Kambo Clinic, we will still contact you afterwards and you have access to your practitioner if you need us.
We don't expect you to need us.
But it's important that you know we're there.
The ceremony may only take a small part of your day.
What we're interested in is what you notice when you get back to living your life.
